US Congressman. He attended Tucker's Law School in Winchester, Virginia, was admitted to the bar, and established a legal practice in Bedford, Virginia. After serving in the Virginia House of Delegates, he was elected as a Whig to Congress in 1838, where he served from 1839 to 1843. He married Elizabeth Cook, daughter of the late Samuel Cook of Franklin County, Virginia, on the November 17, 1840. Defeated for reelection in 1842, he was again elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Thomas W. Gilmer, and served from 1844 to 1845. He would serve one more term, from 1847 to 1849. He was the unsuccessful Whig candidate for Governor of Virginia in 1859. During the Civil War, he was a captain of Home Guards in the Confederate Army. Following the war, he returned to his legal practice in Bedford.
