Son of Matti Marttila and Ida Lemponen. When they were teenagers, he and his brother Jacob joined the Finnish Army to fight the Russians. Because they did this without their father's permission, they were ostracized by the family. So, they immigrated to Conneaut Ohio in 1917. Jacob remained in Ohio. Isaac moved to Detroit and married Minnie in Kaleva. They lived in Detroit and had a son and a daughter. He contracted tuberculosis in the early 1930's and was committed to a sanitarium. During his stay in sanitarium, he painted several works in the mode of Reverse glass painting. These paintings are among the few mementos the family has of their ancestor.
