1. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Baltimore July 15, 1864, as a private with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, a six-month regiment, but discharged ten days later to "enlist for 1 yr."
2. He waited two months to enlist and mustered into federal service September 6 as a private with Co. L, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). He honorably discharged May 29, 1865, with a case of dysentery that dogged him for the rest of his life.
After the war, he boarded with Dr. John Channell in Wrightsville, York County, but soon made a permanent move to Baltimore, Maryland, there marrying Ida M. Ettele, nineteen years his junior, on March 18, 1873. They apparently had no children of their own but adopted Burton (b. 11/??/79). For the last twenty-seven years of his life, he worked in the repair shops of the Northern Central Railroad and was a member and one time commander of Dushane Post, No. 3, G.A.R. He died at his home "from congestion of the kidneys" at age 69-11-14.
