Ronald had epilepsy. He reacted to it by getting into trouble. The family moved around and his father tried to find ways to keep Ronald busy, and thus, out of trouble.
Finally Howard was hired by a company that was reclaiming 2000 acres of river bottom, 20 miles south of Blythe, California. They cleared the land and planted it in cotton.
On June 30, 1952 Ronald drowned in the main feeder canal. His father found him after a few hours. They had to drain the canal. Howard pulled Ronald from the canal and worked on him trying to revive him, but could not.
Some time later, his parents saw Ronald walking across the field as if to say goodbye. It gave them some comfort.
