Matthew John Steffen, 54, of Crystal Lake, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois in Woodstock while surrounded by his loving family after a brave and courageous battle with melanoma.

He was born June 6, 1955 in Elgin to Nathan and Marilyn (Pierson) Steffen. In 1973, he graduated from Larkin High School in Elgin.

On May 4, 1996, he married Natalie Sichel in Crystal Lake. Together, they had two beautiful daughters, Molly Ann and Jordan Leigh.

Matt worked as a carpenter his entire life. Most recently he was the owner/operator of Steffen Custom Builders. Matt loved spending time working with his hands, puttering in his yard, watching the Chicago Bears, sitting on his deck looking at the lake and spending time with family.

Matt will be remembered for the deep love, concern, and compassion that he showed to all he met. He put others before himself and had a great joy that overflowed from him onto those around him. Most important in his life was his love for his wife, children, parents, and siblings. Matt was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church, Elgin, Illinois.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Natalie (Sichel) and his cherished children, Molly Ann and Jordan Leigh, all of Crystal Lake; his parents, Nathan and Marilyn of Elgin; his siblings, Philip (Mona Mehta) of Arlington, Virginia, Rachel (Jim) Stall of Phoenix, Arizona, Mark (Barb) of Elgin, Sarah (Ralph) Hoppe of Middle Grove, Missouri, Becky (Jim) Miller of Marengo, Illinois, Mary of Elgin, David (Linda) of Elgin, and Debbie (Greg) Kellenberger of Elgin; his parents-in-law, Ed and Patsy Sichel of Fort Myers, Florida; his sister-in-law, Allison Sichel of Colorado Springs, Colorado; twenty-five nieces and nephews; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews. Matt is also survived by countless friends and his church family from the Apostolic Christian Church of Elgin. Matt was preceded in death by both his maternal and paternal grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

The visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010 in the Apostolic Christian Fellowship Center, 2760 West Highland Avenue, Elgin, and Tuesday from 8:45 until 9:30 a.m. in the Church.
