Herbert attended the German Lutheran School at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he received a degree in Chemistry. He was employed by Ethyl Gasoline Corp. as a chemist. He lived in Kansas City, Missouri, and Detroit, Michigan, before moving to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Obituary - The Omaha World Herald 2 March 1938:
"Herbert H. Garland, 32, Dies; Former Omahan
Herbert Henry Garland, 32, former Omahan, chemist for the Ethyl Gas corporation, died Sunday in Baton Rouge, La. Funeral services will be held here Thursday at 2 p.m. from First Lutheran church with burial in Prospect Hill cemetery.
Mr. Garland left Omaha about 10 years ago, worked in Kansas City and Detroit before going to Baton Rouge. He completed his high school education in Omaha and was graduated from the University of Nebraska.
He is survived by his wife, Isabelle, and daughter, Barbara, of Baton Rouge and his mother Mrs. H. Garland 5915 Mason street. The body will be brought to the N.P. Swanson mortuary.
