Info on this young boy who was Nat American John took in to raise
In a letter written 1947 by Admiral Will Mann to Harry Berry of Baird, him being son of Capt Andrew Jackson Berry and owned then the Berry homestead in Williamson County, he was inquiring about items of Berry family history and Mann replied, “When I bought the Berry homestead 1924, there was a tombstone for George Washington Berry, son of John Berry, time had defaced the inscription but there was a Magby grave which later learned belonged to a Nat Am boy John Berry had taken in and raised and grave for John Berry himself.”

John Berry was granted the land by the Rep of Tx in the Leag of Land grant, one of the lst deeds rec in Williamson Co. The Berry's remains are still buried on the site in a small graveyard that inc several other immediate family members which include John Berry, sons Patrick Henry died aged abt 4yo and last son born to him and 3rd wife Hannah Devore, George Washington Berry.
The grave of a Native American child called Magnby the Berry family cared for lies a few feet away from the other 3 graves. The Berry's farmed the land used the large spring to power the lst grist mill in Williamson County. The spring's flow is estimated at two to three million gallons a day. Berry reunions are held at the gravesite today. The site then was occupied by tribes of Tonkawa and Apache even bef the Berry's came. John Berry did mill work for the Indians and they were allies even when other settlers were being attacked. He rode a white horse which nobody did in those days as it would be too recognized but that exactly why John Berry did it." Some of us believe Capt William Smeathers is also buried here on the ole Berry land.
