I have used the birthdate that exists on his Birth Record, though his Death Record lists his birth date as June 1832. Thomas was the son of Thomas L. Marshall (1808- ) and Hannah Tappan Boardman (1809-1889), both Newburyport natives who married on Nov. 11, 1830 in Newburyport. He had one known sibling, Stephen Bartlett Marshall (1808-1844).

Thomas lived his entire life in Newburyport and was self-employed as a painter. He married on Oct. 7, 1852 in Newbury to Sarah E. Dwyer, the daughter of Thomas Dwyer and Abigail M. Rapall. They had six children. They include Clark B. (Born in Oct. 1853), William (born about 1855) and Caroline Knapp (born 1874).
Sarah's dates of birth ans desth are uncertain. It is speculated she was born about 1835, and may have died between 1900 and 1910, when her name disappears from Census records and her husband Thomas lists himself as widowed.
