Colonel Dominic L. Mayo, passed on peacefully Friday, March 6, 2009, with his family by his side, at Ocean Medical Center.
Born March 30, 1922 in Jersey City, he lived there before moving to Brick in 1977. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Anne DiStaulo Mayo, in 1992. As a family tradition, he followed his older brothers in World War II. He enlisted and served as an infantryman in the African Campaign and later in the Invasion of Anzio Beachhead. Upon his discharge, he joined the New Jersey National Guard. He rose from sergeant to lieutenant colonel, retiring in 1977. As a captain, Dominic became a full-time employee with the Guard, with his rank commensurate with his various command positions. His military career expanded over 35 years. He was so proud to say that his "...Mayo family had combined service in the military for over 200 years." His military awards are too numerous to cite; to name a few, The World War II Victory Medal, The European Citation, and the Army Commendation Medal. Upon retirement in 1977, Dominic was employed by the State of N.J. as the administrator of the Medical Facility in Sea Girt, serving all N.J. National Guard personnel.
Dominic is survived by three daughters, Barbara Anne Seiger of Brick, Carolyn Sommers and her husband Peter of Brick, and Donna Marie Cucco and her husband Vito of Westwood; seven grandchildren, Gary, Judith, Tracy, Peter, Erica, Craig, and Michael; and four great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Cheryl, Andrew, and Carolyn.
