Mary was the ninth of ten children born to Deacon Enos Seward and Sarah Goss. Her siblings: Enos Jr., Eli, Amos, Gad, David, Levi, Sarah, Titus and Ebenezer. Her father moved the family from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania in about 1793 to farm the land that originally belonged to her mother's father, Philip Goss IV.

Mary married first, George Goodwin, son of Elijah Goodwin and Parthena Fuller of Sharon Connecticut, on November 14, 1809. They had four children: Elijah, James, Sarah and John, all born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In November, 1815, the family moved to Pike township, Coshocton County, Ohio, where George died in 1823.

Mary married second, Daniel Ashcraft, originally from Berkeley County, Virginia, on November 29, 1825 in Coshocton County. The marriage did not survive and in 1837 a separation agreement was filed that provided for Mary's security. By 1840, when her son James Goodwin, moved his family to Sullivan, Indiana, Mary went with them.
