Born in Cane Creek, North Carolina, the daughter of John and Christian Horneday, Keziah Horneday married John Patterson Sr., the son of John and Margaret Patterson, in 1780. When John and Keziah came to Missouri in May of 1797, they brought with them 10 children under the age of 15. Among their children were William, Eleonor, Elisha, Keziah, Lydia Irecon, Sanders, John Jr., Jane, Anna, and Rhoda. Only four of the children are buried in Coldwater Cemetery, including William Patterson, the eldest, who married Assenath Piggott, daughter of Captain James Piggott of Piggott's Fort, Illinois (near Cahokia) and Frances James Ballew Piggott. Both John Patterson Sr. and Captain Piggott were Revolutionary War veterans, but had served in different areas -- Patterson in North Carolina, Piggott in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the West.

When Keziah died she was only 45 years old. John, who outlived her by 30 years and remarried (to Sarah "Sallie" Patterson -- a widowed cousin), is also buried at Coldwater.
