LACONIA - Julien V. "Chic" Joyal, 87, of Pine Street, died Monday, March 26, 2007, at home.

Julien was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Laconia, the son of Albert and Atoinette (Spenard) Joyal.

Chic, a highly respected auto mechanic, was a lifelong resident of Laconia and operated Chic's Amoco gas station on Court Street in Laconia as well as other stations for Stafford Oil Co. throughout his career. In addition, with his wife, Regina, he sold antiques at flea markets throughout New Hampshire.

He was most proud of having been a Seabee of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the 130th Construction Battalion who served in World War II's Pacific Theater, including at the battle of Okinawa. As a veteran, he devoted his life to fellow veterans.

He was past commander and active chaplain of the Seabees Island X-4, a past commander of the American Legion Wilkins-Smith Post 1 of Laconia, and a member of the VFW Post 1670, Laconia.

He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Regina (Mercier) Joyal, in 2003; by Pvt. Roger Joyal at Okinawa in 1945; as well as several brothers and sisters.


Burial will be held at New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
