Civil War Union Soldier, Historian. He served during the Civil War as a Private in Companies E and D of the 40th New York Volunteer Infantry. His 5,000 page personal memoir, containing detailed watercolors, maps, and drawings of Civil War battlefields, landscapes, and prisons were the basis for a permanent exhibition at the Virginia Historical Society, and a traveling exhibition. They were also eventually published in two books: "Eye of the Storm: A Civil War Odyssey" (2000) and "Images from the Storm" (2001).
