WILLIAM THOMAS ANDERSON

September 9,1840 - December 6,1924

He was the second son of Henry Anderson and Anne Elizabeth Grant of Wayne County,NC. was born September 9,1840.
In 1860, Henry Anderson, age 45, and his wife Anne Elizabeth Grant, age 40, the daughter of Ephraim Grant, lived on a small farm in the New Hope Township of Wayne County,NC. They were the parents of thirteen children, ranging in age from six months to twenty-one years.
William Thomas, age 20, and his older brother, James Henry, age 21, enlisted June 3,1861 in Company D, 4th Regiment Infantry of the NC State Troops. The company was under the command of Capt T.M. Blount. A third Anderson brother,Jesse, age 19, enlisted in the same company on February 28, 1862. In May 1862, the three Anderson brothers were sent to the battlelines in Virginia. James Henry died May 31,1862 in Richmond,VA and two weeks later on June 14,1862, his younger brother, Jesse, died in camp near Richmond. They were side by side in plots 98 and 99 at the Oakdale Cemetery located in Richmond,VA. In November 1993 A CSA Veteran Memorial Markers were placed at the Anderson Family Cemetery in their honor and service.
On May 3,1863, William Thomas Anderson was captured near Frederickburg,VA by Union Troops and transferred to a prison near Washington,DC. He was sent May 10, 1863 to City Point, VA for a prisoner exchange and would later rejoin his company. During a battle on May 12,1864 at Spotsylvania Court House in VA, he was struck in his left elbow. He was transferred to Winders Hosptal in Richmaond for medical attention but due to the injury he was unable to regain the full use of his left arm. On December 12, 1864, by reason of total disability, he was retired by the Confederate Army to the Invalid Corp.
Returning to the Dudley Depot in Wayne County and to his home in 1865, He married Susannah Lee, she was also his step sister. She was born June 22,1847 and was the daughter of John Lee of Sampson County,NC and Margaret Hayes Lee.
After the death about 1862 of his mother, Anne Grant Anderson, Henry Anderson (William Thomas's father) married January 19,1863, Margaret Lee (Susannah's mother.
William Thomas and Susannah Lee Anderson lived and farmed in the Indian Springs township and were the parents of eleven children.
On Decmber 27,1919, Susannah Lee Anderson, died at the age of 72, and William Thomas would spend his final years in the home of his youngest son, Jesse Thomas, his wife, Janie Hines Anderson and three of his grandsons.
On December 5, 1924, at 11:50 PM, William Thomas Anderson
died at the age of eighty-four, He was survived by six sons:
John "Johnny" Henry, James "Jim" Cicero, George Washington, William "Billy" Nixon, Robert Ed Lee, and Jesse Thomas Anderson; two daughters Lula Anderson Newcombe and Sallie Elizabeth Anderson Grady. 46 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; two brothers: George Anderson and Robert Person Anderson; three sisters: Charity Anderson Benton, Sallie Anderson, and Betty Anderson Mozingo.
The Mount Olive Tribune reported his death and wrote of his CSA military record. The newspaper reported that in the presence of large gathering of several hundred friends and relatives, the Confederate Veteran's body was laid next to his wife of 54 years at the Anderson's Family burying ground located near Sleepy Creek.
William Thomas was affectionalty known as "Billy" or Paps" to his family and friends.
