Wayne the son of Clinton B. Vessell and Harriet E. Vessell who was deceased, of Haralson GA. Father of daughters Elizabeth M. and Pamela S. Vessell of La Grange GA enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 9, 1967 in Atlanta GA. He arrived in Vietnam on March 13, 1968 and was assigned for duty with Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF. In mid June, the 2d Battalion was assigned to the SLF and PFC Vessell`s unit was redesignated Company G, BLT 2/7, 9th MAB.

While on Operation EAGER YANKEE, in Phu Vang District a Marine combat patrol on a search and clear mission were fired upon by an enemy sniper. PFC Vessell was hit by the small arms fire resulting in his death.
