A private in Company D of the First Regiment of Virginia Infantry, he spent much time "Absent - detailed in Richmond." He worked at the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office. He was captured at Dinwiddie Courthouse on 29 March 1865 and released 13 June 1865. When he took the Oath of Allegiance at Point Lookout, he was described as 5 feet 3 and one-half inches tall, having blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion.
