Buzz was an Undersheriff and deputy county treasurer in Golden Valley County. He had been an officer for about a month and a half when he accompanied Sheriff Elmer Dolve to the ranch of W Lee Simpson. Simpson greeted them with gunfire which resulted in the death of Burford. His funeral was one of the largest ever in Golden Valley County. Simpson was hanged for the murder on December 30, 1939.
