LEBANON ENTERPRISE OBITUARY – 1937
JOHN BEAVEN DIES AT HOME - PARALYSIS FATAL TO ST. MARY FARMER, DEPUTY SHERIFF CANDIDATE, SUNDAY
John Graves Beaven, 38 years old, prominent young farmer of the county, succumbed Sunday night [May 9, 1937] at his home near St. Mary. His death was due to paralysis. Early last Thursday morning he was stricken with a severe headache and since that time he declined rapidly until the end came. The first stroke occurred on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon he suffered a second one. He had been in an unconscious condition most of the time since being stricken, and from the beginning little hope was held for his recovery. Mr. Beaven was born in the St. Mary locality on July 22, 1898, a son of Charles Beaven, deceased, and Miss Julia Beaven of St. Mary. He was educated at St. Charles School and St. Mary's College and all his life had been spent in the vicinity where he died. Since finishing his schooling he had been engaged in farming. Each year during the tobacco selling season he was connected with the Growes Tobacco Warehouse and for some time had assisted at the sales at Marion County Stockyards on Saturday. He was well known throughout the county and was popular with all who knew him. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed in his home. All of his life he had been a member of St. Charles Catholic Church at St. Mary and had practiced his religion faithfully. At the time of his death, Mr. Beaven was a candidate for Deputy Sheriff on the ticket headed by Roy B. Hourigan. On January 7, 1920, Mr. Beaven was united in marriage to Miss Grace Hill, daughter of the late C.S. Hill of this city, the ceremony taking place at St. Augustine's Church here with the Rev. Joseph A. Hogarty officiating. He is survived by his wife and six children, Charles, John Jr., Hill, Mike, Joe Lee, and Teresa Martin Beaven, all of whom reside at home. He is also survived by his mother; one sister, Mrs. W.A. Roby of Louisville; and three brothers, Charles & Hugh Beaven, both of St. Mary, and Lee Beaven of Louisville. Funeral services were conducted at St. Charles Church Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock by the Rev. Fred W. Dudine, and burial was in the church cemetery. The pallbearers were Roy B. Hourigan, J.W. Dawson, Robert Harmon, Virgil Sanders, I.M. Gray, Ben D. Cecil, Robert L. Spalding and John Mill
