Enoch was one of thirteen children who are all gone now. When Enoch was a boy there were but a few school advantages, only subscription schools being held, and he attended not more than six months in all his boyhood days, and that was all in German. His English schooling was limited to only three days. He began to work to help support himself and brothers and sisters, and was employed by the coal company as a carpenter. He married Miss Rachel Yoder March 5, 1854. They came to Cedar County, Iowa, in 1869, and this has been their home for the last 52 years. Fourteen children were born to this couple - five boys and nine girls. Four boys and three girls have passed away, most in childhood. There are seven still living plus 43 grandchildren, 55 great-children and 5 great-great grandchildren. Besides there were several who have already past away.
After living on the farm in Cass Township for 30 years, the Mayer's purchased a residence in Tipton in 1899 where they could take life easier, and there they have resided for the last 22 years. Enoch's days have been spent thus - 38 years in Pennsylvania, 30 years on the farm in Cass township and 22 years in Tipton
Enoch was born of Christian parents and was given to the Lord in baptism in his infancy. At the age of 18 he made public profession of his faith, united with the Reformed church and when they moved to Tipton, church membership was transferred to the Reformed church here. He was a member of the order of Odd Fellows since 1963. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.
Funeral services were held at the reformed church by Rev. J. N. Naly with interment at Sand Hill cemetery, the Odd Fellows conducting the services at the grave.
