Al was born and raised in Seattle, graduating from high school there. He joined the Air Force and served in Vietnam during the Conflict, receiving an honorable discharge in 1967. He worked at Northwest Airlines while waiting for his assignment to an Academy class with the Seattle Police Dept, and started as a Patrolman in 1969. During his time with the Police Dept he worked in several divisions including Patrol, undercover Narcotics, Swat training, Robbery and Homicide and training for a liaison position with the Fire Dept on Arson cases. At the time of his death he was working with the Robbery and Homicide Division. His death was not work related. Al's loves in life were his daughter, Shannon; his work; his family; and softball. His Siblings are: Larry Smalley - brother

Kathy Baird - half sister
Carol Whipple - half sister
Corine Hall - step sister
plus Nieces and Nephews
Al's cremated remains reside in the Rhododendron Room at the Queen Anne Columbarium (also known as Wright Columbarium), next to the Mt Pleasant Cemetery office on Queen Anne hill in Seattle, King, WA.
