He was born May 25, 1925, in Marquette, a son of the late Bernard and Anna (Verdette) Baker and was a lifelong resident. Orville was a WWII veteran, having served in the Navy.
Orville married the former Fern J. Marier on September 21, 1946 at St. John's Catholic Church in Marquette.
He worked as a machine operator for E.J. Longyear Company from 1946 to 1958. He then went to work for UP Power in the Presque Isle plant as an oiler and later retired as Superintendent of Operations in 1988.
Orville and Fern spent their winter months in Lake Havasu City, Arizona since 1990. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He was also a member of St. Peter Cathedral.
He is survived by four children, Robert (Lee) Baker of Austin, TX, Kathy (Gary) Miron of Brooklyn Park, MN, Paulette (Arthur) Pickering of Marquette and Anne (Michael) Horwood of Maple Grove, MN; a sister, Vernette Mills of California; brothers, Alvin (Gloria) Baker and Harold Baker, both of Marquette; 5 grandchildren, Todd (Erin) Miron of Shorewood, MN, David (Denise) Pickering of Green Bay, WI, Jennifer (Nick) Lafayette of Marquette, Drew Horwood and Paige Horwood, both of Maple Grove, MN; four great-grandchildren, Caden and Olivia Lafayette, Arianna Pickering and Luke Miron; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Fern on May 3, 2007; son, Jospeh Baker on January 8, 1992; brothers, Kenneth, Gerald and Arthur Baker; and sisters, Elaine Chiconsky, June Belmore and Ethel Davis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. in St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. Timothy Ekaitis officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the mass in the Bishop's Room of the church. Entombment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.
