Killed by a Confederate shell fragment that took off most of his head 13 days short of his 32nd birthday. He was quickly buried near an oak tree by members of his company, and his hat and sword marked the grave until he was reburied in Gettysburg National Cemetery a few months later. His sword was interred with him by his family's request. Today he lies under a marker that incorrectly identifies him as "2nd Lieut. George McCrary".
The above history is from the book, "Ohio at Gettysburg", by T. McCay, 1903
