Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1962 to 1964, 1966 to 1972), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. Born James Ivan Roland, Jr., he attended Broughton High School in Raleigh before signing as an amateur free agent with Minnesota in 1961. He made his big league debut with the Twins on September 20, 1962; in his only game that season he pitched two innings without allowing a run. Primarily a reliever throughout his career, Roland's most productive period was while with Oakland. He maintained an ERA of below 3.00 for two consecutive seasons (1969 to 1970), including a 2.19 ERA with 5 wins in 39 games during 1969. In 261 career games, he compiled a 19 win, 17 loss record, with a 3.22 lifetime ERA, in 450 innings pitched. Following his baseball career, Roland worked as a sales consultant in the sporting goods industry. He died from cancer.
