Mary Ellen Mogee was born Aug. 9, 1856, near Philadelphia, Pa. Remaining there until she was eleven months old, her parents moved to Missouri. She remained with her parents until she was married to Charles Jefferson Broce on Aug.9, 1875. She lived near St. Joseph, Missouri until 1879 when she came with her husband and two children to withstand the hardships and help to build up a home in Harper county. She quietly passed away at her home 3 1/2 miles north of Attica on the evening of December 1, 1899. She was the mother of ten children, six of whom are still at home. She leaves a bereaved husband, 8 children, a widowed mother, one sister, one brother and a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at the U.B. Church in this city and the remains were laid to rest in the Attica cemetery. - The Attica Independent, Attica, Kansas, Thursday, December 7, 1899.
