Nancy Ann Garren was the daughter of William Riley Garren and Sarah Ann Lanning Garren. When Nancy's family settled in Catheys Creek township of what was then Buncombe County (later Hendersonville then Transylvania) she met and married James Hamlin Duckworth. They were the parents of eight daughters and two sons.
