Irene Finchum Barker, 98, of Newport, Tenn., died Saturday, May 23, 2009. Born in Blount County and raised in Knoxville, Mrs. Barker moved with her husband Walter to nearby Vonore, where he worked with Stokely Van Camp Canning Company.
Eventually, his job brought the couple to Newport, where Mr. and Mrs. Barker, along with Wade and Louise Butcher, later operated Butcher & Barker Supply Company for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Barker were faithful, active members of First United Methodist Church, Newport.
Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Barker; sister, Mary Nell Finchum; and brothers, Fred Finchum and A.D. Finchum. She is also survived by niece Phyllis Finchum and husband Julian; niece, Jane Love Finchum; other extended family; adopted family Love G. Shults, Bill and Odette Shults, Ellen Koutsky, Glen C. Shults, Linda Vespereny, Andrew Shults, Sarah Shults and Thomas Shults; and special friends Rosetta McCarter, Rita Cope Messer, and Brad Yvonne Cox.
A private burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Knoxville. A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 31, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of First United Methodist Church, Newport. The Rev. Rick Spell, Jr., will officiate.
