Aviation Pioneer. Major General USAAF WWI and WWII aviator, Aviation Hall of Fame. On June 28-29-1927, Hegenberger, and First Lieutenant Lester J. Maitland became the first aviators to fly from the mainland United States to Hawaii, winning the Air Force's Mackay Trophy. He made the first solo blind flight (1934), and developed the first instrument landing system.
