Mr. Ayers attended Tusculum College and graduated from ETSU. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. While in the Army, he won the U.S. Army Boxing Championship of the Alaskan Theatre. He also played professional baseball in Helena, Arkansas, and Kingsport. Mr. Ayers retired from Signal Knitting where he was Personnel Director.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Morgan and Elizabeth Gilmer Ayers; brothers, William, David, and Hugh Ayers; and sisters, Charlotte Powers and Gilmer Harton.
Burial will follow Oak Hill Memorial Park with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Posts #3/265. Pallbearers will be Brett Creasman, Dr. Eric Knoche, J.T. Little, Nick Harrison, Buck Mathes, and Kyle Huffman.
