Walter Albert Fowler, 86, of Marysville, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at his home after a short illness with cancer.

A professional photographer, he and his wife were owners and operators of Fowler Portrait Studio from 1962 to 1999 in downtown Marysville. Prior to the downtown location, he operated the business out of the front porch of his home from 1958 to 1962. Over the years, he trained at photography seminars and studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design.

A former associate of Eljers Plumbingware and a farmer on Paver-Barnes Road, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was a former member of VFW Post 3320. He was a member of Palestine Lodge No. 158 F & AM and an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan. He enjoyed being outside, petting his cats and growing tomatoes in his backyard.

He was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Mercer's Bottom, W. Va., to the late George and Iva Hobbs Fowler. He also was predeceased by three sisters, Edith, Iva and Goldie, and three brothers, Russell, Jim and Arthur.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Della Mae Gibbs Fowler, whom he married Aug. 19, 1939, in Marysville; a daughter, Linda L. Fowler of Marysville; a son, Walter T. (Sharon) Fowler Jr. of Fairbanks, Alaska; seven grandchildren, Michael (Donnis) Bowersmith of Marysville, Kasandra (David) McCormick of West Mansfield, Jeffrey Bowersmith and Martin Bowersmith, both of Marysville, Todd (Lorie) Fowler of Westerville, Lisa (Mark) Underhill of Florida, and Rachel Fowler of Arizona; eight great-grandchildren, Michael Bowersmith, David Bowersmith, Shawn(Bonnie) McCormick, Bill (Becky) McCormick, Tiffany (Rusty) Atha, Matthew Bowersmith, Tasha Bowersmith and Christopher Underhill; six great-great-grandchildren, Alexis, Lane, Cody, Caleb, Kylie and Ellie; a brother, Elza Fowler of Urbana; two brothers-in-law, DeWitt "Dick" Gibbs of Bellefontaine, and Henry Lowe of Ostrander; a sister-in-law, Ila Fowler of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Underwood Funeral Home with Masonic Lodge memorial services at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Tim Muller officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Union County Military Funeral Honor Guard.
