Gertrude Emilie Johanna (Huber) Schnetzler was born 4-22-1911 Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany, the daughter of Elizabeth Huber & Otto Morch. In 1921 she was adopted by her mother's husband Dr Karl Friedrich Schnetzler. After completing her education she joined a dance group and performed on stage as part of the chorus in ballet presentations in Germany.
With the political unrest that started in Germany in the 1920's she decided to immigrate to America. A Quota Immigration Visa, # 23676, was issued on 7-2-1929 by the US Consulate, Stuttgart Germany to Gertrude Schnetzler. She arrived at Ellis Island NYC in November 1929. She obtained a job as a Nanny for which young German women had an excellent reputation. She was rooming with Frank & Jenny Haines in Utica, NY, and through them, met her future husband Howard Short.
After marriage, and starting her family in the Long Lake area of the Adirondacks, she moved with her husband to Endicott, NY in 1942. She also worked at the IBM Corporation during the WW II time frame. When laid off at the end of the war, she obtained a job with the General Electric Corp in Westover, NY working there as a precision mechanical inspector until she retired in 1970. Her favorite hobbies were cooking and bowling. After her husbands death in 1973 she eventually moved to Yuma, Arizona and remained there until her death on 2-29-1992. She is buried in the family plot in Winthrop, NY.
