Luther attended school in Athens. He then attended Beal College.
He married Gertrude (Landry) Bernard on Oct. 26, 1996 in Norridgewock.
He started out as a woodsman, then he went into carpentry. He was the tax collector for the town of Athens for several years. Then Luther was a bookkeeper for several businesses; he also managed the Country Store in Athens and George's Banana Stand in Skowhegan. Luther was a past member of the Athens Fire Department.
Besides his wife of 13 years, Gertrude, he is survived by his two children, Bruce Avery and his wife, Valerie, of Athens, and Lorraine Fox-Jeans and her husband, David, of Athens; one brother, Leslie Avery and his wife, Melody, of Maine; two grandchildren, Michael Avery of California and Alisha Fox of Athens; four stepchildren, Frederick Winchester Sr. of Skowhegan, Richard Winchester and his wife, Jennifer, of Skowhegan, Ty Dauphinee and his wife, Michelle, of Skowhegan, and Regina Beaulieu and her husband, Mike, of Anson; many stepgrandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren; former wife Crystal Avery of Athens; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother and father; one brother, Lawrence Avery; and one son-in-law, Bill Fox.
