Charles Hamilton Kirkland, son of John and Sarah Kirkland, was born in Randolph county, Mo., January 22, 1856; passed from this life May 31, 1938, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Susan Clarkson in Downing, Mo., aged 82 years, 4 months and 9 days.

He came with his parents to Schuyler county where he grew to manhood and married Martha Ellen Green on November 15, 1876, who preceded him in death, Dec. 16, 1933.

To this union were born seven children, two of whom preceded him in death, Minnie Ross and Clarence E. Those surviving are: M. G. of East Chicago, Ind., J. H. of Santa Ana, Calif., W. M. of Farmington, Mo., F. P. of Camden, Mo., and Mrs. A. M. Winter, Jr., of Centerville, Iowa.

He became a member of the Coffey Christian church in 1881, later transferring his membership to the Downing christian church in 1908 where he served as deacon.

He became a mason in 1887, having recently been presented his 50-year membership pin by the Downing Lodge.

He leaves, also, eight grand children, four great grand children, one sister, Mrs. Susan Clarkson and a host of friends. Two sisters, Mrs. Nannie Curtis and Mrs. Margaret Green and one brother, Thomas Kirkland, preceded him in death.

He was a devoted father and a kind and loyal friend.

Funeral services were held from the Downing Christian church Thursday, June 2, conducted by the Rev. P. M. Lind of Queen City. Interment in Downing cemetery by the side of his wife.

The members of the Downing Masonic lodge conducted services.
