Mr. Atkinson was a son of the late Jesse Tinks and Lula Bullock Atkinson. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was retired from Dupont and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

He was survived by his wife, Frances Snyder Atkinson, sons: Phillip Michael and Joseph Walter (Jody), Daughters; Janet Mooneyhan (Charles), June Holland (Eugene), and Judy Atkinson. He was also survived by his sisters; Agnes Atkinson Anderson and Thelma Atkinson Ray (Durock).

He was predeceased by brothers, Ernest Atkinson and Rolland Atkinson and sisters Mary Baxley (Fred) and Nettie.
