Frank Bucaro Sr., 79, of Bartlett, a retired engineer and a substitute math teacher, died of cancer Monday, May 21, in his home.

Born and raised in Chicago, Mr. Bucaro graduated from Roosevelt High School there and served six years as a machinist in the Navy during World War II. After the war, Mr. Bucaro received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Northwestern University in Evanston.

He worked as an engineer for 32 years at Peoples Energy Co. in Chicago. He retired in 1980. For the next five years Mr. Bucaro served as a substitute math and physical education teacher in Elgin-based School District 46.

An avid runner who ran 3 miles a day before work, Mr. Bucaro ran in four Chicago marathons, including the first in 1977. "He was running up until a few years ago," said his wife of 55 years, Lois, who added her husband ran even when he was undergoing chemotherapy. "He was always vibrant and jolly," she said.

Other survivors include two sons, Frank and Drew; a daughter, Lynn Hutton; two brothers, Joe and Basil; two sisters, Ann Nash and Lorraine Irving; 15 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Friday in Countryside Funeral Home, 950 S. Bartlett Rd., Bartlett. A Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Damian Catholic Church, 109 S. Crest Ave., Bartlett.
