Marguerite was born in Port Gibson, MS to Maston Taylor Tickle/Tickell and his wife Julia Boswell. She was the fourth of seven children. (The last name Tickell has been spelled many ways over the years.)

Marguerite became a telephone operator and in 1925 she handled a phone call to the Sanford family regarding the death of Alonzo Orlando Sanford. Consequently, she met and married his son, Emile Sanford. She and Emile raised two sons. They lived in Memphis, where they were members of Temple Baptist Church for many years.

After his death in 1972, she moved to Bald Knob, Arkansas, where one of her sons lived. She became an active member of Central Baptist Church there, and of the Bald Knob Garden Club.

Marguerite educated herself by keeping a notebook and writing down words she heard that she did not know. She would later look up that word and learn it. She was a very determined and courageous lady!
