Terence, the son of Tex E. Barney and Helen A. Barney deceased, the husband of Susan J. Barney of Omaha NE, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 5, 1968 in Omaha NE. He arrived in Vietnam on February 27, 1969, and was assigned to Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On March 15, an incoming round of Friendly Mortar fire impacted near a squad of Marines in their position close to the hamlet of La Bong in Hoa Vang District wounding PFC Barney. He was evacuated to the NSA station hospital in Da Nang where he died two days later as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds
