A most sacred place. This is Old Friendship Cemetery near Vina in Franklin County, Alabama as it looked late in the afternoon of July 28, 1991. The photograph was taken by Bonnie Gober Crocker, gg-granddaughter of James Gober Jr and Nancy Wynne Gober who are buried in this cemetery. Because vandals had desecrated graves and destroyed many of the tombstones, my sister Carolyn Gober and I could not know for sure which were our gg-grandparents' graves. We took comfort in the fact that their final resting places were in such a peaceful, serene setting. The cemetery is difficult to locate. We stopped and asked a nearby Dobbs gentleman. He told us that when a new church was built about a mile or so down the road, they stopped using the old cemetery for burials and the cemetery which sprang up around the new church became known simply as New Friendship Cemetery.
