Donald Glen Bruner, 60, of Lancaster, MO, died on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO.
The son of Lawrence Ivan and Helen Maureen (Hartley) Bruner, Donald was born on September 11, 1949 in Kirksville, MO.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Swedberg Bruner of Lancaster, MO; his children by marriage to Sherry Bushnell: Nancy Bruner Berryman and husband, Craig of Colorado Springs, CO and Adam Bruner and wife, Dawn of Kirksville, MO; and from marriage to Susan D Mathews his son Jon Drew Bruner of Lancaster, MO; step-children from marriage to Linda S Mineart: Christy & husband Mark Smyser, Wendy & husband Doug Williams, Rachel & husband Stephen Dudley, and Austin Slaughter of Queen City, MO. From marriage to Brenda Stice: Ashley and husband, Daniel Spurgeon of Downing, MO and Dusty Swedberg of Lancaster, MO; two brothers, David Bruner and wife, Kristi of Kirksville, MO and Larry Bruner and wife, Evanne of Virginia Beach, VA; one aunt, Coleen Shaw of Gallipolis, OH and one uncle, Lowell Bruner of Queen City, MO; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Arlene Stice of Downing, MO; two brothers-in-law, Roger Stice and wife, Margie of Hamilton, IL and Mickey Stice and wife, Lurene of Downing, MO; step-grandchildren,several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many good friends.
His parents preceded Mr. Bruner in death.
Donald G. Bruner graduated from the Queen City High School in 1967. He then joined the United States Marines and served his country in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He returned to Queen City, MO, where he began farming and worked for the Missouri Highway Department. He became the Deputy for the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department in 1977. He became Sheriff in 1991 and was currently serving his 18th year as Schuyler County Sheriff. Sheriff Bruner loved Schuyler County and the people in it. He was very proud to have served the county in Law Enforcement for nearly 33 years. He often remarked that he had served Schuyler County as deputy and then as Sheriff longer than anyone in Schuyler County's history. He suffered a heart attack in 1985 at the age of 36 but continued to work and persevere until his heart gave out on Wednesday night, October 14, 2009.
Donnie loved spending time with his family and friends, traveling, woodworking, John Wayne, mowing his lawn and gardening. He was very proud of his three children and remarked often that he was so proud that they were so successful in their lives and careers. He had a special bond with his grandchildren and spent many hours with them.
He was a member of the Missouri Sheriff's Association, National Sheriff's Association, Schuyler County VFW Post #5898 and American Legion. He attended and was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Downing, MO.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lancaster Christian Church in Lancaster, MO with George Mullins, pastor the United Methodist Church in Downing, MO assisted by Jim Campbell, pastor of the Disciples Christian Church of Kahoka, MO. Pianist was Betty Duncan and the Brothers and Sisters Quartet provided music. Special selections were "Amazing Grace" and "Peace In The Valley".
Pallbearers were Tom Rohn, Jeff Gottman, Larry Curry, Eldon Grissom, Robert Becker, and Jimmy Curry. Honorary Pallbearers were Chuck Tallman, Carl (Fritz) Gottman, Dick Evans, Art Jeffries, Larry Collins, Roy Clay, Fred Lanham, and Glen Adkisson. The Missouri Sheriff's Association President, Charles Heiss, gave an eulogy. Visitation was held on Saturday, October 17, 2009 between the hours of 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO.
Memorials have been established for the family. Burial was in the Queen City Cemetery in Queen City, MO. The Scotland County VFW Post #4958 of Memphis, MO gave military rites. At the cemetery, Roger Heard played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes.
