Herman was one of four sons of John Richard and Mary Catherine Boley Dorsey of Washington, D.C. His siblings were John William, Edward Lee, and his nearly identical twin Robert Emmet Dorsey.
Herman served in France, Belgium, and Germany during WW II with the U.S. Army Air Corps, 9th Air Force, 788th Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Battalion. Herman was awarded the Purple Heart for service in Germany.
Herman married Alma May Cox in 1939 and they had two children, Richard Wayne and Christine Ellen Dorsey.
He married Helen Ruth Kramer Shelton in 1978.
