JOHN MILTON ABBOTT

Wednesday, March 3, our family was devastated by the unexpected loss of John Abbott, a great husband, father and grandfather. John grew up in the Northwest with his parents, Al and Helen. He graduated from Seattle's Garfield High School in 1955.
On his 18th birthday, he committed to four years with the U.S. Marine Corps, then served 18 more with the U.S. Air Force. In addition to five states, John's family accompanied him to overseas duty assignments which included Iran, Pakistan and Turkey. After over two decades of military relocation, John retired from the Air Force in 1978, returning to his native home, the Pacific Northwest. He earned a Bachelor of Arts at Portland State University and was employed by Konica.
John stood upon a strong foundation of values and was the honest man that many aspire to be. With integrity, he was proof that a man does not require great wealth or title to be admired by many. John wasn't a griever, rather a man of principle. He was a dedicated father who taught us fairness and discipline and a loving husband whose devotion to Carolyn grew steadily with the years.
A proud patriot and man of peace, he loved America with unwavering loyalty. John belonged to many organizations which included: TREA; First Marine Division - Columbia Chapter; American Legion Post #1; Air Force Sergeants Association; AFTAC Alumni Association; Loyal Escorts of the Green Garter; St. Therese parish; and Meals-On-Wheels.
John's memories will be shared by his survivors - his wife of 50 years, Carolyn; his children and their spouses, Markham and Dorothee, Margaret and Eric and Pam. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Karmen and Denise, Mary Margaret, Helen Marie and Brandon, Jordan, Devon and Brygham.
Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010, followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. in St. Therese Catholic Church, 1260 N.E. 132nd Ave., Portland. There will be a brief reception and then a military burial ceremony in Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, John and Carolyn would appreciate donations directed to the Amberside Meals-On-Wheels program.
