Selden enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1915, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 1918. He served aboard escort vessels during WWI, and had assignments in Haiti and China between 1922 and 1932. He was based in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. During WWII, he served as a force, intelligence and command staff officer until taking command of the 5th Marine Regiment, which he commanded at the Battle of Cape Gloucester. He resumed staff duties in 1944.

From January to September 1952 he commanded 1st Marine Division in Korea in January 1952. His final assignment was as commanding general of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, from which he retired with the rank of Lieutenant General in 1955.
