Santiago "Chaggo" Encinias, age 81, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, passed away on Feb. 28, 2010, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Santa Fe.

He was born in San Geronimo, N.M., on Sept. 6, 1928, to the late Manuel Encinias and Eumelia Quintana Encinias.

He was united in marriage in 1956 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church to Juanita Gonzales.

He retired from the New Mexico Saw Mill where he was employed as a laborer. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and friends and also loved his animals, loved to joke, whittle wood, cook and chew tobacco.

A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Manuel and Eumelia Encinias; wife: Juanita Gonzales Encinias; brothers: Delio Encinias, Servardo Encinias, Fermin Encinias and Acension Encinias; brother and best friend: Abelino Encinias; sisters: Alice Santillanes, Tillie Benavidez and Aldemira Encinias; grandson: Jerry David Encinias and brother-in-law: Arcenio Lucero.

He is survived by sons and daughter: Jerry Encinias of Santa Fe; M. Jessie Encinias and Jimmy Lee Encinias both of Las Vegas; grandchildren: Adam Encinias (Katherine), Amanda Padilla, Lilly Montaño (Partner, Daniel Fierro), Jerroldine Madrid (Partner, James), Johnny Montaño (Agnes), Jessica Montaño (Eugene Lopez), Jerry Montaño Jr. (Jennine), James Encinias (Andrea Sandy-Encinias) and C.J. Fresquez all of Las Vegas; great-grandchildren: Roger Griego, Samantha Griego, Johnathon Valdez, Alexandra Montaño, Jerriette Madrid, Amelia Madrid, Darren Madrid, Tiffiny Montaño, Juanito Montaño,Brandon Montaño, Dominic Montaño, Destiny Montaño, James Encinias, Jr., Lee Ann Sandy, Destinee Sandy, Evony Encinias, Matthew Padilla, Marcos Padilla and Jolissa Padilla; sister: Esther Lucero of Ojitos Frios; brother: Narciso Encinias and wife Tina of Las Vegas; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at the Rogers Chapel and also at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday, March 5, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Father C. John Brasher as celebrant. Interment will follow at the San Jose Cemetery, Las Vegas, with the following serving as casket bearers: Jerry Montaño, Jr., Ben Encinias, Adam Encinias, Raquel Lucero, James Encinias and Richard Encinias. Serving as honorary bearers: Jose Encinias, Tomas Encinias, Pete Encinias, Max Lucero, Johnny Montaño and Lilly Montaño.

He will lie in state from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Rogers Chapel, where family and friends may call.
