Timeline:
1921 - Ms. Eckert was born on March 27, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania to Frank and Katherine aka Catherine Eckert. Per her mother Katherine's sworn 1927 Petition for Naturalization her daughter's legal name was Katherine E. Eckert. She was listed as Catherine Eckert in the 1930 Census, and that is the same name her father used for her probate administration. Her high school yearbook shows her name as E. Catherine Eckert. Yet, once she started nursing school and in the service, she was known as Evelyn.

1928 - her mother Katherine/Catherine Eckert, nee Geiger, died on July 17th of a ruptured appendix when Evelyn was just seven years old. Her mother died at South Side Hospital in Pittsburgh, the same hospital where Evelyn later studied nursing. Per her mother's Petition for Naturalization, she was emigrated from Darwar, Hungary in 1912.

1939 - graduated from Taylor Allerice High School in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

1939/1940 - After high school, Evelyn enrolled in the South Side Hospital School of Nursing located on South 20th Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

1943 - Evelyn joined the US Army Nurse Corps on March 10, 1943. At the time of her enlistment, she was living at 314 Amaball St., in the Mt. Washington neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA.
