Ava Smith Carmichael died suddenly at her vacation home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on August 10, 2004. Ava was everyone's friend, a devoted wife and mother, and a person with widely diversified interests and talents. She graduated from Texas Tech University with honors at age 18, and attended the School of Theatre at the University of Iowa, where she met her husband, David Carmichael. Dr. Carmichael joined the Navy, and Ava was a proud Navy wife.
When they moved to San Diego, Ava immediately auditioned at the Globe Theatre and was cast in a leading role in the play "Ten Little Indians." This began a long commitment to the Globe, and she was elected to Presidency of the Globe Guilders shortly after its organization. Ava always described her vocation as being a "physician's wife." This allowed her to travel widely throughout the world with her husband in military and academic roles.
She served as president of the San Diego County Medical Society Auxiliary. In addition, she was an active and enthusiastic member of Las Patronas and the Wednesday Club. Ava and her husband enjoyed extensive travel. She loved to spend time in Borrego, California and Maui, Hawaii.
Ava was also a skilled pilot of light aircraft, earning her single engine, multi-engine and commercial licenses. She was a member of the 99's and flew in the "Powder Puff Derby" several times. Ava and her husband co-authored an instructional manual entitled "From White Knuckles to Cockpit Cool," which won a national competition as an instructional manual.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Dr. David Carmichael, four daughters: Catherine Xander St. John of San Diego, Heather Carmichael Olson of Seattle, Linda Carmichael Gamble of Bethel, Maine and Ava Carmichael Eagles of Lamoni, Iowa; their husbands, four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren.
A Celebration of her Life will be held on Saturday, Aug 28, at 10am at St. James-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla. She will be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery.
