Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military academy in 1853, served as a Lieutenant in the 6th United states Infantry and as Aide-de-Camp to Governor Walker of Kansas. With the secession of his home state of Virginia, at the start of the Civil War, he received a commission as Lieutenant Colonel in the 14th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Serving in General Charles Field's brigade, he was involved in many engagements being wounded twice the Battle of Gaines' Mill. After recovering, he was promoted Brigadier General for conspicuous gallantry in July, 1863. He served as a brigade commander in the battles of Bristoe Station, Mine Run and the Shenandoah Valley. In 1864, he fought at the battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House, until he was severely wounded. He spent the remainder of the war assigned to duty as a member of the general court-martial of the Department of Richmond, Virginia.
