Mathias J. Abel

Mathias Abel, age 92 of St. Peter passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Church of St. Peter in St. Peter with Fr. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in St. Peter. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mathias was born on April 6, 1916 in Oakmont PA to Mathias and Apollonia Abel. He moved with the family to Kasota MN in 1921. He graduated from Kasota High School in 1933. After high school he worked for Breen Stone and Marble Co. for 2 ½ years before entering the US Army on May 23, 1942. After being honorably discharged on January 14, 1946, Mathias worked as a crane operator for the Babcock Company.

Mathias was united in marriage to Cecelia A. Reule in 1969. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the St. Peter VFW and American Legion.

Grateful for having shared his life are his step son: James (Rozella) Reule, step grandchildren: Scott Gorans, Jolene (Emmanuel) D'Huyvetter, Kristin Kramer, Gabrielle Reule, and Isaac Reule; 5 step great-grandchildren; sister: Magdalene "Lena" (Harvey) Krueger; and 9 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Cecelia (2004); brothers: Fred (2006) and Joe (2004), and 3 sisters: Helen Abel, Katherine Rodell (1991) and Ann Basye (1993).
