George was born in Delaware County, Ohio to the parents of George Atkinson (1801 - 1885) and his wife Savannah Farris 'Atkinson' (1805 - 1859)He had 4 brothers and 5 sisters.

He married after being in the Civil War at the age of 24 on the 31st of December 1868 to Emma Ellen Spencer (1849 - 1933)in Paxton, Ford County, Illinois. Together they had 8 children;

William Faris: 1875 - 1927
George Spencer: 1880 - 1965
Alma: 1883 - 1944
Arthur J.: 1888 - 1906 (18 years old, died from a lightening Strike)

Mary Irene: 1873 - 1874 (passed at 10 months old)

George was in the Civil war on the Union Side. He enlisted once then enlisted again. He was a Private. Enlisted in 1864. Was in the 184th Ohio Volunteer Volunteer Infantry. Got out then went in again on the 14th of Feb 1865, in the 145th C Regiment, Ohio, where he served for 4 months.
George was in the battle of Georgetown when General Early made his raid on Washington. Discharged on the 18th of September 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee (Record in Civil War records provided by Fold/3) After the war he moved to Illinois.

He came to Norton, Kansas in the spring of 1884 where he a trustee of Rock Branch Township.

George passed on the 8th of June in 1931 in Norton, Kansas at the age of 86. Buried with his wife Emma in the Norton Cemetery in Norton, Norton County, Kansas. His wife outlived him by 2 years.
