A resident of Lake Charles, Mr. Abshire was raised in Westlake and graduated from Westlake High School in 1957. He had worked for Texaco as a truck driver and Huber Oil Company as a dispatcher, and in later years, for Sweet Delights in Moss Bluff.
R.J. loved camping in Toledo Bend and the outdoors, along with hunting, fishing, and cooking. R.J. had also coached and officiated youth basketball, baseball, and football along with having coached Marion Sheriff's Baseball League. R.J. will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Ruth LeBleu Abshire of Lake Charles; a son, Allen Abshire and wife, Gayla of Lake Charles; a daughter, Shari Abshire and partner, Sallye Salter of Moss Bluff; six grandchildren, Jason Abshire and wife, Meagan, Sgt. Jerod Abshire and wife, Laryn, and Brandon Abshire, Lane and Megan Saucier, and Lori Williams and husband, Blaine; one great-grandchild, Keslyn Abshire; and his beloved dog and friend who R.J. lived his last days for, Stormie.
His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Johnson Funeral Home. Father Brian King and Rev. Mark Stagg will officiate. Burial will follow in Sallier Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his three grandsons, Jason, Jerod, and Brandson Abshire, and his three nephews, Bobby LeBleu, and Michael and Frank Primeaux. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 12, from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, February 13, from 8 a.m. until time of service. A scripture service will be held Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
