John Larry Saarikoski, 75, of Gheen, Minnesota, passed away Friday, May 12, 2006 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, MN.
John was born on October 31, 1930 in Floodwood, MN, the son of Laurie and Mayme (Simi) Saarikoski. He lived in Meadowbrook on the family farm until he married his first wife Ailie Jacobson on August 16, 1950. They moved one mile down the road and bought their first and only home where they raised their children. Ailie passed away on November 22, 1982. John worked for U.S. Steel until the late 1950's when he was laid off. He then worked in the woods with his brother, Leonard, and their father, Laurie, and also took pride attending his farm. He then started working for Eveleth Mines in 1965 as a maintenance mechanic until his retirement. John married his second wife, Deanne Lundin Quaas on October 20, 1984 in Cook; they were married for 22 years. He enjoyed waking up early and taking morning drives in the country; he also could be seen driving his tractor on his farm. He loved to hunt, fish, and spend quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife: Deanne of Gheen, one son: Dan (Laura) Saarikoski of Gheen, three daughters: Kathy (George) Paavola of Wyoming, MN, Elaine (Joe Black) Ollikkala of International Falls, and Lori (Clark) Nurmi of Angora, two step-sons: Rick and Daniel Quaas of Orr, three step-daughters: Robin (James) Aker of Orr, Shelia (Dave) Malmstrom of Virginia, and Becky (Donald) Luecken of Gheen, one brother: Leonard Saarikoski of Gheen, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

John is preceded in his death by his parents, first wife Ailie Saarikoski, one daughter Judy Ann Saarikoski on March 19, 1972, and one sister-in-law Donna Saarikoski on July 27, 2005.
