Iraqi Statesman. He served as the 2nd President of Iraq from February 8, 1963 to April 13, 1966. He graduated from military college in 1939 and later trained with British troops in Germany. In 1958, he, along with General ʿAbd al-Karīm Qasim, played an important role in the overthrow of the Hashimite monarchy of King Faisal II. After the coup, he became deputy prime minister and minister of interior under Qasim. In December of 1958, however, he was convicted of attempting to murder Qasim and was condemned to death. He was pardoned and released in 1961. In February of 1963, he led a coup that overthrew Qasim and he became president. He went on to serve in this position until April of 1966, when he was killed in a helicopter accident in southern Iraq.
